and since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale
WHO: riku and tetsuo did this. you just happened to be there for it.
WHERE: a fountain square in nonah (to start)
WHEN: today, friday may 12
WHAT: Riku floods Nonah. After this.
WARNINGS: none yet but who knows with this bunch
1: the year of the flood
[It starts on what is otherwise a perfectly regular Friday afternoon. If you're close enough to it, you'll hear an odd sound before you see the sudden tower of water descending from the odd black wormhole suspended in the air. You don't have to be too close to hear the torrent, though, nor to recognize the scent of the ocean. For those lucky enough to not be on the street and above the ground when the water appears, for a little while it seems like it might never end. It does end, just as abrupt as it started, but by the time the black, ominous-looking portal above it finally manages to force itself shut, the damage is already done. It's not clear how much water is there, not outside of 'possibly a lake's worth', but no matter how much is there, the fact is that someone just flooded the fountain square on this side of town. At least, that was the center of the flood. Now it's more like someone flooded this entire side of town...]
2: the ocean at the end of the lane
[As the water level lowers and the flood stretches away from the fountain, things start to be revealed. Just the usual you could expect with seawater, at first: lots of trash; sea creatures floundering their way off the hoods of half-submerged cars; flip-flops with no mates, aluminum cans, and plastic bags all gathering in the entrances of shops. Jellyfish. Seaweed by the ton.
But then there are other things. First to make itself known is something that appears to be a jellyfish wearing an inflatable pink-and-purple hat. Its tentacles extend further than any jellyfish's tentacles have a right to extend -- at least twenty feet, but probably more than that. They're strung in between some streetlights, the hapless creature just barely contacting the water. If you're stupid enough to touch it, expect pain on an exceptional level.
Then, as the water ebbs, there’s something else. It’s lying next to the fountain looking as if it regrets all its life choices. It’s also incredibly large, at least compared to a human. It might be about fifty feet long, with a wide, flat mouth and small eyes on the sides of its massive head. It's a whale -- which is promptly going to need to be moved. For now it's just lying there looking sort of sad. Luckily for it, it's still nice and wet, and the slightly overcast, humid day helps -- maybe it'll rain? Either way, it's going to need an enormous amount of help getting back into the ocean. Perhaps you can lend your assistance?]
3: worst. person. ever.
[After the initial shock wears off, in the end, there's still a city beneath all this mess. Nonah, covered in seaweed, trash and jellies as it is, will need to be cleaned back up, and unfortunately, if you want it to stop smelling like seawater sometime in the coming weeks, there isn't much choice but to help. There's a ton of damage -- even if you don't want to help with the whale and the other displaced animals, whether it's sopping up water inside buildings, picking up seaweed or making sure no one was actually hurt by this (many were disgruntled), there's lots to be done. Better start that cleanup soon, before it starts to absolutely reek.]

3, OTA
Hey. Any word yet on what caused this bullshit?

[ Kanaya's had a hell of a day. After sending everyone at the office home or to some other shelter to make sure they aren't in the middle of this, and getting Ashiah to a babysitter outside the city, she's been focused on cleanup. Between the lost productivity, the stench, and just the general breaking of Nonah's streak of safety, she's very cross about the whole thing.
She's been tracking down aquatic wildlife mostly, opening portals to put them in tanks for rehabilitation before they're sent back to the ocean. She's not quite sure if she shouldn't just be sending to their own homes instead, but one of the marine biologists explained that they have to make sure they're healthy first, that they aren't just dropping them into a watery grave. She supposes that makes sense enough. But it wasn't going to work for the whale, good luck finding a tank for that. ]
You've got more fauna over here? Anything that isn't dead?
no subject
...Yeah. Yeah, whoever did it shouldn't get to use portals again for a long time.
[He shakes his head, pushes past it. They have work to do.]
There's some kind of big fish flopping in this pool. I think it's a tuna, maybe.
[Jacob approaches it gingerly, and not just because of the smell. It's a big animal, and it's thrashing around enough to hurt him if he isn't careful. The fish has barely enough water to breathe, but not nearly enough to swim.]
Do you need me to hold it for you?
no subject
Will you be able to grab it easily enough? Well, wait. Sorry, I forget sometimes that you're a psychic.
[ Even having seen him use his biotic abilities numerous times, like that time he picked her up in the dream. She walks over to get a better look at it, taking out her phone to compare it to pictures of tuna.
Turning around, she takes an inventory of the tanks, figuring out which one would be best for it, then opens a portal in the ground nearby. ]
Seems close enough. If you could just drop it right in, they'll get it sorted on the other side.
no subject
[And move them he does, lifting the stranded fish in a biotic field and gently depositing it into Kanaya's portal.]
So, have you been okay? With everything that's been going on, I mean.
[He could have not made it awkward. But then he wouldn't really be Jacob.]

Just different words for the same thing, from what I can tell. Given the way our population tended more heavily towards certain castes, it's likely the majority of my world's population was psychic, you know. I'm more of an exception that way.
[ But then, she was always a bit rare like that. If her caste were more common, it probably would have ruined the whole mystique vampirism had when she was a girl. But then, she might also have been raised knowing how to deal with it when it manifested. ]
Things had actually been going rather well until someone dropped an ocean on my office! I'll have to survey our warehouse some time tonight to see if our reserve stock is still salvageable.
But it's the weekend before my birthday, I really should have expected something to go wrong. [ At least it's not werewolf murders again. She'll be very cross if someone turns out to have died in all of this. ]

[It's a bad joke, but that's what Jacob does (aside from rescuing fish, currently). And if Kanaya doesn't want to talk about the dream bullshit, that's just fine with Jacob. He's okay with pretending that all of it just never happened.]
I can come with you to the warehouse, if you could use an extra set of hands. Your business shouldn't have to suffer because of this... Whatever it is.

I'd be hesitant to impose. Not that the help wouldn't be appreciated, but focusing on where this has personally affected me seems a bit selfish when there's, you know.
[ She turns around to the rest of the city, spreading her arms wide. ] All of this. Nonah was supposed to be safe from this sort of thing. Neutral ground, as it were, where imPorts know better than to make these messes. I suppose it was only ever luck.
no subject
[Which is a depressing thought. As though Jacob and his friends and allies are a kind of poison in a community, or an explosive material just waiting to go off. Jacob looks down at his soaked boots, watching some seaweed floating by.]
You wouldn't be imposing. You deserve help as much as anyone else who got hit by this. Especially with how much you're doing to help with the recovery.
[Moving that fish would have been a hell of a lot harder without her powers, that's for sure.]
ota!!
[the first thing that Lapis does when she looks out the window of her house to see the entire street submerged in saltwater is check that her gem hasn't mysteriously fractured over the course of the night (it hasn't) and then squint up at the sky to be certain there aren't any Homeworld ships hovering within the atmosphere (there aren't).
phew, that was close.
with that crisis averted she's free to explore this new watery wonderland and all the remains from the 'tide'. despite her bare feet slapping against the wet pavement, she never appears to be anything less than perfectly dry; at times, it almost seems as if she mounts the water itself whenever she comes across particularly deep puddles.
people's plights don't really seem to trouble her very much, although she does stop on occasion to watch people scurrying about thoughtfully. it reminds her of the past, and she's not really certain what to do about it. was this really her mess to clean up? Lapis isn't sure.
what does catch her attention more thoroughly are the various sea creatures stranded throughout the city. animals have always been easier for Lapis to deal with, and seeing them in distress drives her to act immediately. it's easy to spot her after a time because of it - large spheres filled with a jellyfish apiece, like some sort of strange and beautiful art installation, orbit around her like a miniature solar system.
she's reaching out now for the trapped man o' war now, although thankfully not literally. nearby water flows from the ground in time with her hand gestures, rising up to gently encapsulate the stranded jelly; tendrils of water untangle the twisted tentacles, folding it into the main sphere. as it floats towards her to join its menagerie of brethren, she calls out sort of absentmindedly to anyone who may be nearby.]
Watch your head.
[it's only because of the man o' war's sting that she thinks to warn passersby, but that's still progress on some microscopic level.]
three;
[manipulating the state of a flood with your own water-based powers is the sort of thing that people tend to notice, even when you're as diminutive as Lapis. although she has no understanding of what a citywide cleanup entails, it's difficult for her to say no when directly addressed by desperate individuals - especially in this case.
anyone who's been monitoring the state of the whale up until now will be quite startled to find it suddenly moving, seemingly of its own accord. it judders and starts, rising up...and up....into the sky?
it's only as it moves heavenward that you'll be able to see the massive cushion of water supporting the whale, like some sort of miraculously waterbed. Lapis can be spotted below on the ground, although given her size it's rather difficult to spot her during the ruckus. she lowers her arms slightly once her cargo has reached a satisfactory height, looking around with mild bafflement.]
Um...where is it supposed to go?
3
She approaches slowly, staring slack-jawed at the sudden waterspout holding it aloft, until she sees a small blue woman who appears to be visibly manipulating it. Okay. So, that's happening. ]
Uh.
Oh! [ She snaps back to attention, she still has a job to do. Looking out east, she tries to gauge the distance, and then adds even more, trying to figure out how deep the ocean needs to be to support this guy, who might not even be a guy at all. ]
I'll, um, get a portal open for that.
no subject
Do you think it'll fit?
['portals' still equate to warp pads in Lapis' mind, a force of habit thousands of years old, and she can't help but feel a bit skeptical about an imPort being able to create a crystal pad large enough for such a creature. she may not be an organic expert, but she's fairly sure that it would be bad for the whale to arrive to its destination in pieces.]
no subject
[ She glances back to the whale again, then the east. Hopefully all this water will keep it hydrated while she tries to run calculations in her head. She doesn't even have real numbers to work with, just "well it looks this big so it'll have to be that big." Probably best to overcompensate.
She begins pulling strings out of the air, reeling them in until the sky opens up near the whale's tail, bringing in cold winds and an even brinier smell than they're already dealing with. It's only about ten feet wide, so that's not really going to work.
She pulls further on one thread, then another until the portal doubles in size, then triples. How the fuck big are whales? ]
Do you think that's big enough, or...?
no subject
Lapis cocks her head in twofold interest as the portal opens, mildly fascinated by the alternative teleportation work. her gaze slides back to the whale, eyes narrowing slightly as she takes stock of it herself. at least she can sort of size up measurements as opposed to her total inability to tell time.]
Maybe a little bigger..?
no subject
How's that?
no subject
[and without another word, the water gently carries the whale right through. Lapis is assuming there's more water on the other side of the thing, and so makes no attempt to recall the medium with which she was ferrying the poor creature. it was just going to be cleared from the city at some later point in time anyway, after all.
task accomplished, her focus on Kanaya begins drifting away once more. she's looking around the general area, scoping out whether or not there are any more large animals that she might be hassled into assisting. if the answer turns out to be no, she might actually be free to go from here.]
2~
[Link woefully carries an armful of cans, bottles, and backs to the appropriate receptacles.]
I just cleaned up the beach in Heropa, too...
Taking care of this world is harder than I thought...[Wistful sigh...]
