That's the thing--no one should care.

[ It honestly just slips out, what she says, and how she says it--this is new territory for her. She should know better than to let people start caring. Because in the end, they can be loose ends or worse, they can be worried about her. When they shouldn't even know she exists. ]

[ He honestly just stares at her for a moment ]

You don't have to go through your life alone. Maybe it's easier that way, but honestly, is it better? I don't think so.

It wasn't easy making sure no one in the galaxy knew about you, either, you know.

[ But she sighs in resignation. ]

But I see your point. I'm sorry, Charlie.

Just think about it. This house is more than big enough for all of us. We could convert the basement into a living space so you could still have your privacy.

I can't grow plants in a basement.

[ She likes having flowers around, okay. ]

I'll... think about it.

Whatever you decide just... please don't disappear.

[ This is when she finally moves her arms to wrap them around Charlie, returning the hug. ]

It's probably better if I do, but--I'll try not to.

Hide. Hide for as long as you have to.

[ He pulls back to try and get a look at her face under the hood. ]

Just don't disappear. I mean it.

[ When normally she might turn or otherwise shy away from someone trying to get a look at her face, she doesn't budge from Charlie. He's already seen her face, after all. And by her own accord, even. ]

You know those mean the same thing for me, right?

[ Forgive the beating around the bush, Charlie. It's how she manages to stay so mysterious, although her lame attempt at humor is betrayed by the tired, conflicted expression on her face. ]

[ He reaches up to cup her cheek. The look on his face is solemn and sad at the edges. ]

There's a difference. Trust me.

[ She places one hand on Charlie's; the other pulls her hood back. It's okay, with Charlie. ]

Charlie... Disappearing is what I do.

[ He looks slightly alarmed at first- they're in the middle of the living room. Then he just heaves a sigh, shaking his head ]

I just... I want you to come back. That's all.

[ Truth be told, if someone were to come in, she'd either just pull the hood back up or go invisible. Right now, she'd much rather just be with her best friend here. ]

I haven't heard that in a while.

Do you want me to say it again? I'll say it as many times as it takes to get across the point that I care about you and actually want you around.

[ She'll just... move to give him another hug, now. Damn you, Charles. ]

[ He hugs her back, holding her tight ]

You know I love you, right?

[ She's silent for a long while, entirely unsure of how to respond, when it hits her: ]

... I love you too, Charlie.

[ For a moment, he wonders if he scared her off with that, but when she replies he can't help the smile that appears on his face.

He gives her another squeeze, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. ]

Hey, Peter got me some old movies for my birthday. Did you want to stick around and watch some?

[ She only offers a small nod in response, still sort of reeling from--this.

That sounds nice, she thinks. Maybe it'll help keep her mind off of things for a little bit. ]

Well, and when I say "some", I mean a ton. Let me go grab the pile.

--Okay. I'll be. Here. Not dying. Or disappearing.

[ She lets go of Charlie and resumes curling up into herself, except now she's sort of falling to her side, letting her head rest against the arm of the sofa. ]

Hey. I'll be right back. Promise.

[ and true enough, he's only gone for a moment, coming back with a rather sizable stack of DVDs in his arms. ]

Between you and me, I think he went a little overboard.

[ Even though she's put her hood back up in the time that Charlie went to get the movies (because she's 100% sure she looks like shit right now anyway. she hasn't exactly brought herself to see what she looks like in the mirror at all), she still manages to look pleasantly surprised at the stack of DVDs. ]

Well, that's rude. Trying to show up your best friend with such a great present.

--But really. That's awfully sweet of Star-Lord.

I think he had a minor heart attack when I told him I'd never seen Singin' in the Rain, so he wanted to make sure there was nothing else I missed.

But I still like your present better, so don't worry.

[ She folds her arms in a staged huff, even though she's still keeping her legs curled up. She will not forget this easily. The North remembers. ]

Honestly, who does he think he is? Your boyfriend? That's my job.

But I'm glad you like my present better. Maybe.
