THE GALA

The museum's gone all out for the exhibit, "240 years of America!", proud to be the host.

While there are American flags everywhere, the decoration is mostly tasteful but undoubtedly patriotic in nature. Everything seems to be a shade of red, white or blue.

A pair of smartly-dressed greeters at the lobby check tickets and coats, and for imPorts a flash of their tattoos in the dim light will get them through.

Once inside, the museum has a broad open floor-plan with large entrance-ways. Just past the lobby is the large main hall hosting the gala, the museum café with the open bar to the right, activities for the children or young at heart to the left, and the exhibit in the back.

The activities include presentations on American history, with actors in costume. There's also a whole row of costumes for dress-up and reenactment, from all sorts of time periods. There's even a museum-wide scavenger hunt you can get a list for from an attendant.

The main hall is split between a wide open space for dancing, and dozens of round tables with red white and blue flowers, and alternating table cloths in the same colours. The Café area has a buffet table, with a wide variety of cuisine, and some vegan and vegetarian options. And be sure to have a drink at the open bar.

There are quite a number of locals, those interested in history, local politicians, and of course, quite a few there for a chance to meet imPorts. Everyone is dressed to the nines, and be sure to appreciate all the fashions on display.

From 6-8 pm of the evening guests can relax, enjoy themselves, and partake of the festivities. They may even admire the artifacts on display, from all eras in American history, at least something from every war America has participated in, and many personal items of American presidents and other historical figures. The rest of the museum is open to those who came to gala, including quite a lot of important Civil War artifacts.

After eight, however, things get quite a bit messier.

THE FIREWORKS

There's quite a lot you can conceal in a suit jacket, if it's tailored just right, and nobody tailors like a dream thief. Nonetheless, laden with five rockets, his outfit does sit a little oddly on Kavinsky's frame, so he's grateful for the sweltering heat of summer. He carries his jacket over his arm, and leaves a greeter frowning at his rude reply. July the 4th is his favorite. It's a good day to be alive. Or you know. Not alive, whatever floats your boat.

Anyone who recognizes him immediately knows there's something strange about his presence here. He plays on his phone through a couple reenactments, and then sets off a proximity alarm to a handsome painting. He waves hello here or there. He has a bit to drink, is told he can't smoke.

And then at eight, he drops off his jacket and lights it on fire.

A waiter is the first casualty, running heroically toward the smoking garment with a fire extinguisher. When he's only five feet away, the whole thing suddenly bursts into light and heat and screaming noise. Five massive eagles, made of golden flame, erupt into the air. They immediately shoot apart from each other, shrieking, blowing over wineglasses, singeing paintings, and chasing patrons. They aren't the most dangerous thing this world has seen, but it is utter pandemonium for five minutes until they're spent.

CALENDAR MAN & UNCLE SAM

And after that, comes Calendar Man.

Julian Day has been looking forward to this for quite some time. On June 14th, Flag Day, he had even gone ahead and stolen the George Washington costume from the hit musical Franklin! for this purpose. With so many reenactors around, Julian easily slips inside during the chaos caused by his recruited fellow; just one of the actors, one dressed as George Washington.

Then he quietly starts stealing things. The alarms are already blaring by this point anyway. And just as the fireworks start to end, Calendar Man gets ready to summon his monster.

In the middle of the exhibit, visible to both those viewing the artifacts and those attending the gala, the rotting corpse of Uncle Sam seems to step out of the air itself, massive and terrifying. It's about 18 feet tall, and its top hat skims the ceiling, causing lights to fall and crash.

Julian takes that exact moment to smash the glass holding the Declaration of Independence and steal his final prize. His triumph achieved, Calendar Man calls to his creation, who lifts him from the ground.

Being raised up in the hands of his creation, Calendar Man raises his voice above the din, and cries: "Wishing you all a happy Fourth of July from Calendar Man, De Chima!"

Just so that everyone knows who's responsible.

The Uncle Sam joins in with booming laughter, oddly filtered as if it were speaking through a 60-year-old radio. Its voice, similarly eerie and echoed, is loud. "Stand and fight!"

The gala, already ruined after the fireworks, gets worse as the attendees panic, tripping over themselves to get out of the way. Soon the fight will start, and there’ll be plenty of people to rescue, structures to keep from collapsing, and artifacts to save.

Uncle Sam

Making his way to the weapons check/coat closet was not as easy as it should have been. It had been a long time since Daryl had been stuck in the middle of a crowd of panicked people who had no idea how to handle and emergency. Even at the prison with the Woodbury folks, they knew to clear out and get somewhere they could put a good strong door between themselves and the walkers. And when the Governor came back, they'd evacuated in a pretty damn orderly fashion, all things considered.

Most of the people around him weren't watching where they were going or watching out for anyone else the way his people did. The way they'd learned to. So they weren't paying attention to the fact that there were kids around or that those small bodies found their way under tables. Tables that were not, in fact, a good place to hide and be safe. Tables could easily be crushed by an over large foot.

Daryl had to push his way through the oncoming crowd, wings forcing them to part around him, to get to the table he saw the body crawl under and flipped it with one hand. He didn't wait for protests before he was bending over, wings spread above his head like a make-shift umbrella, to pick the kid up and hold him against his chest, "I got ya, just hold on tight."

Aurican sees a family face and holds on to Daryl's familiar clothing tightly. As long as someone he knows is with him, he knows he will be fine.

"What's going on?"

Daryl had both arms around him at first, but as he started to move with Aurican, he shifted the kid so he only needed one to hold onto him.

"Some asshole's making trouble for everyone," he answered in a gruff, but soft voice. He was trying to keep his tone calm and collected. So Aurican wouldn't panic more than he already was. "But you're gonna be fine. I'm gonna get you out of here."

"The people here keep knocking me down," Aurican explains. Usually he'd be quick about escaping, except he's not in his powerful form, but in a small, bipedal form where he's not entirely sure how to move in.

"Where's Kang?"

Aurican had mentioned that name before. Something about the guy having scales like him. Daryl took a long look around, but didn't see anyone fitting the description of 'scaley and dragony'.

"Ain't sure," he said, getting a move on toward the exit. Not an easy feat with everyone panicking and running from the giant Uncle Sam. They barely got two feet one way or the other without Daryl having to close his wings up a little to block someone stumbling in from one side or the other. And that wasn't even counting the falling bits of ceiling and pillars as the place got torn up. "Did he come with you?"

[personal profile] ofgoldenfoil 2016-07-06 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, he did. I asked him to take me here when I heard a gathering of imPorts was happening."

Now Aurican wishes he never consider to try it. "He was going to get drinks when the firebirds started."

Meaning the fireworks.

Daryl turned to try and get a look at where the bar and cafe were supposed to be set up. Unfortunately so much had fallen already and so many people were running around in the haze of smoke and dust that it was difficult to get a clear view.

"Alright, we'll head that way and if we don't see him when we get there, we're gonna head out of the building," Daryl said while pulling out his government issued smart phone/communicator/whatever the hell it was being called. Waved it so Aurican could see, "You got yours on you? You talked to Kang on it at all?"

Oh. That thing.

"A few times. But not recently."

He lifts his head up, looking for Kang's familiar shape. "He can't be too far."
dirtyredneck: (Neutral Surprised (7))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-07-11 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"You know how to pull up the history? So I can get a look at him?" One of the few things that made having the damn things useful was the picture function. "See what kind of shape I'm looking for in all this dust?"
governorkang: (Body language)

[personal profile] governorkang 2016-07-12 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
And Kang isn't too far away. He's simply having trouble making it through the crowd of panicked people back to where he'd left the youngling.

"Aurican!"

It doesn't help that all of the lights, smoke, and noise have gotten him turned around. He's easily a head taller than most humans, and his wings and snout make a very distinctive figure - hopefully Aurican had the sense to stay in one spot and will be watching for him.

Aurican stiffens as he hears the familiar voice calling his name. He twists around, looking for the source. "There!" He cries, pointing at the large, winged shape, with bronze scales glittering in that available light there is. "That's Kang right there!"
dirtyredneck: (Neutral Surprised (6))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-07-12 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Daryl had to spin his body around, too, to where Auri was looking over his shoulder. Sure enough there were the shape of wings and something decidedly not human attached to them. He started over, carefully pushing his way through the people still rushing around, trying to stay close to the walls that were still intact so they had more room to move.

"Kang!" he roared, trying to get the guy's attention. Even if he didn't know him, he still had a better set of lungs on him than Aurican (currently) did.
governorkang: (Sons-of-bitches command face)

[personal profile] governorkang 2016-07-13 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
There. He can just barely hear Aurican's voice and another's, much stronger, calling for him. A gap in the smoke reveals the two figures, giving him a direction to head towards. He bodily shoves his way through, cursing profusely when someone steps on his tail. After several seconds, he finally manages to make his way through.

"I'm not sure if your real form would be a blessing or a curse in this situation." He turns to the human. "Thank you, for helping him. We need to get him out of here now."
dirtyredneck: (Angry (14))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-07-14 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I was planning on it," Daryl defended like he'd been accused of keeping Aurican there longer than he needed to be just because he could. "Kid didn't want to leave without you."
ofgoldenfoil: ([pb] for the night has been unkind)

[personal profile] ofgoldenfoil 2016-07-14 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't be trampled over if I had my real body," Aurican has felt the need to point that out to Kang.

Another piece of the ceiling fall, this time landed on a nearby woman, covering her with white pasty chalk.
governorkang: (Default)

[personal profile] governorkang 2016-07-15 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oops. He hadn't meant it to sound like that. He'll apologize later, when they have time. And, now the ceiling is collapsing.

Fantastic.

An idea strikes him, and he reaches into one of the pouches at his side to pull something out. "I'm going to cast a spell to make all of us able to move more quickly. It might feel a little strange."
dirtyredneck: (Action Battle Pose (4) Waiting)

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-07-18 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hell no!" Daryl turned and twisted his body so Aurican was pulled away from whatever it was Kang was doing. Aurican might trust him, but Daryl didn't know shit about him beyond that. And he wasn't going to risk the unknown in the middle of danger.

"We can move jus' fine without it. You get in front and push shit out of the way, I'll bring up the back with the kid. He'll be safe under my wings."
ofgoldenfoil: ([pb] for the night has been unkind)

[personal profile] ofgoldenfoil 2016-07-19 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Aurican isn't sure what is going on. Despite the fact that he lived a parentless life and has very little concept as to what a parent does and is supposed to do, he gets the impression that parenting appears something like what is going on between Kang and Daryl, and Aurican doesn't really like it, as the focus between the two's argument.

"Please make a choice soon, I am afraid of the building falling on us," Aurican pleads to the both of them, hoping any debate can be staved off in the event of danger.
governorkang: (Neutral)

[personal profile] governorkang 2016-07-25 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Fine. We don't have time to argue," Kang sighed, muttering words in a spidery-sounding language and gesturing towards himself with the items from his pouch in hand. The most important thing at the moment was getting Aurican to safety.

And, with a blur, he was on the move, pushing obstacles out of the way and clearing a path through the thinning crowd of people.
dirtyredneck: (Neutral Stare (10))

[personal profile] dirtyredneck 2016-07-26 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The guy moved faster than expected for his bulk and Daryl suspected it had to do with the words he'd spoken. That 'spell' bullshit. He definitely didn't like what it did. Moving fast was one thing, moving that fast seemed just as dangerous for the person doing it as it was for those around them. Specially if they weren't used to moving that quick.

But since Kang had given in easily, Daryl followed him, Aurican in his arms. Wings curved over their heads and the invisible shield blocking all sorts of falling and flying debris from all sides. It even pushed a few chairs out of the way when Daryl started to squeeze between them after they'd fallen into his path due to other party-goers knocking them that way.

Once they were out and into the open air, the night clear and the air as clean as it could be with a building getting torn apart from the inside out just behind them, Daryl moved off to one side where fewer people were standing. He bent down to put Aurican on the ground, "You sure you gonna be okay with Kang?"
